Synopsis : The movies starts with Dev Anand coming out of a jail, and then the story runs in flashback. Dev Anand stars as Raju, a freelance guide, who earns his living by taking visitors to historic sites. One day a wealthy and aging archaeologist Marco comes to the city with his young wife Rosie (Waheeda Rehman). Marco wants to do some research on the caves outside the city and hires Raju as his guide. It doesn't take too long for Raju to realize that their marital life is on rocks. Raju develops a soft corner for Rosie, he comes to learn about Rosie's past and her love for dancing, which is something totally unacceptable to Marco. Marco gets busy with the caves and Raju takes Rosie out for a tour of the nearby sites. On returning back to Udaipur, Rosie discovers that Marco is having an affair with a native tribal girl. Raju induces Rosie to leave Marco and come with him, and she does exactly that.

After learning of Raju's affair with Rosie, his mother leaves him, his friend and driver also abuse him and severe all ties with him. He loses his business and the entire town develops animosity towards him. Undeterred by these setbacks, Raju helps Rosie embark on a singing and dancing career, and she achieves instant stardom. With money in hand Raju falls into bad habits, such as gambling and drinking. One day he is caught forging a check, is arrested and ends up spending a number of years in jail. On the day of his release his mother and Rosie come to pick him up but they are told that he was released six months ago because of his good behaviour.

Upon his release Raju wanders alone, a farmer (Bhola) finds him sitting alone in a temple and mistakes him for a saint. Bhola is having a problem with his sister, Raju uses his vocal skills and knowledge to convince the girl to act according to her brother's wish. Impressed by this Bhola spreads the news through village, and he is taken as a holy man in the village. The farmers begin to bring gifts for him and start consulting him with their problems. Initially Raju enjoys this newly endowed demigod status, as this provides him with food, shelter and all the basic necessities without working too hard. He makes the village temple his abode and starts acting like a real saint, he begins growing a beard and dressing accordingly, and is called Swami Raju. Slowly he learns of the problems that plague the life of his disciples, he actually starts taking interest in their lives. He acts as a teacher to the village kids, and makes efforts to make the life a better experience for his followers.

A famine hits the whole region and now the villagers begin fearing for worst, they ask their spiritual guru (Raju) to fast to bring rain. At first Raju opposes the idea, going as far as telling Bhola that he is just a human like all of them and even worse a convict. But even the confession was not enough for the villagers to give up on their belief. He reluctantely goes to fast, although he does not believe that there is any relation between a man's hunger and rain. With fast Raju undergoes a spiritual transformation, and as the duration of his fast increases, his fame starts spreading and people from all corners come to see him and take his blessings. In one of the most memorable scenes an American journalist from NBC asks him whether he truly believes that his fast would bring rain, he smiles and says "These people have faith in me, and I have faith in their faith". Upon hearing his fame Rosie pays him a visit, so does his mother and his friend. He now has everything he has lost a long time back, in the final scenes of movie his health is falling, and he thinks about the meaning of his life. On one hand there is Rosie, his Mother and a chance to get back to his past life, on the other hand is a cause, he eventually decides not to end his fast. In the final scene, when it starts raining and everyone rushes to outside leaving him behind, he hears the rainfall and collapses.

Sangam songs

Sangam is a 1964 hindi movie produced by R.K. Films and directed by Raj Kapoor. Music for the film was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan, with song lyrics by Hasrat Jaipuri. Sangam was producer Raj Kapoor's first color film, distinguished by its technicolor and epic length (even by Bollywood standards). It became a smash hit in India and is considered a classic today. One of the features of the film that became widely used later on in Bollywood is the use of foreign locales for on-location shooting, such as Venice, Paris, and Switzerland for the film’s honeymoon sequence. This started the Bollywood trend of shooting songs sequences abroad (primarily in Switzerland), against the background of "exotic" landscapes.

This love triangle is a psychologically multifaceted tale about male bonding, the meaning of love and friendship. In the context of these relationships, Sundar is the one who is preventing the other two people's happiness and finally also thwarts his own. He appears as being naive and innocent, yet he seems adamant at only noticing things that suit his own mindset. He is full of self-pity and bullies the others emotionally. An important and critically regarded theme in the film is male bonding and the informal sharing of a woman between two male friends. Gopal indulges in his own "sacrifice", but never thinks of the woman's feelings he ostensibly loves.

Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai songs

Jis Desh Men Ganga Behti Hai is a 1960 Hindi film directed by Radhu Karmakar. The film stars Raj Kapoor, Pran and Padmini. The team of Shankar Jaikishan wrote music for the film, which includes the hit songs penned by Shailendra "O Basanti", "Jis desh men ganga behti hai" and "Aa ab lout chalen".

It tells the tale of a village simpleton singing away “Mera naam Raju gharana anaam behti hai Ganga jahan mera dham” in the Madhya Pradesh ravines who is captured and taken a prisoner while attempting to save the leader of a gang of outlaws, Raka, wounded in a gun battle. In a somewhat open captivity he flips for the dacoit chieftain’s (Nayanpalli) daughter Kammo (Padmini) who is also Raka’s love interest. While singing reverential songs and invoking the purity of the Ganga he sets about to reform the dacoits, amply supported by Kammo who had herself indulged in minor acts of dacoity in the past.

Pran lived the role of Raka and had never looked more menacing in any of his earlier get-up and roles. Despite attributes and motives Padmini too proved brilliant, especially in the song and dance situations, and in her encounters with Raj and confrontations with Pran. Her teasing and mocking moments with Kapoor, especially the way she shifted glances and uttered ‘hoi hoi ho’ (which even got used as a break in the song narratives) turned out to be a scoring point in the movie which had as many as eight extremely hummable songs penned by the inimitable Shailendra-Hasrat Jaipuri combo, and set to lilting music by Shankar Jaikishen. “Begani shadi mein Abdullah deewana” (Mukesh-Lata); “Kya-Hua” (Lata-Asha) and the solo Mukesh number “Aa ab laut chale” (though he won the Filmfare trophy for “Honton pe sachchai rehti hai”).

Anand realizes that Madhumati herself had come and runs up to the terrace where her ghost beckons him. She had fallen from the same terrace trying to escape Ugranarayan. Anand follows her falling to his death. Devendra's story is over. "But," he says "I finally did have Madhumati as my wife. In this life - Radha." Just then news comes that the train in which his wife was travelling has met with an accident. The road has been cleared, and the two friends rush to the station. Naya Daur is a 1957 Indian drama film starring Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, Ajit and Jeevan. Originally filmed in black and white, the film was colourized and re-released on 3 August 2007. The movie was produced and directed by B.R.Chopra.

The film is set in post-independence India where Industrialization is slowly creeping in. The focus is on Tangawallahs who earn their living transporting people from place to place on Tangas(horse - carts). Their livelihood is threatened when the son of a rich landlord (Jeevan) begins operating a bus service in the town, which he subsidizes heavily with the sole intention of first driving the Tangawallahs out of the down and then making profits. Dilip Kumar plays one of the Tangawallahs who petitions the landlord over this injustice. Then, Jeevan's character proposes a competition to decide which service is the best - The Bus or the Tanga? It is then decided that there will be a race between both the vehicles. The Bus driven mechanically and the Tanga driven by Dilip Kumar's character. If the Bus wins the race, the Tangawallahs would not complain further and if the Tanga wins, the Bus service would stop. This competition was a farce from the start itself since nobody could even dream that a horse cart could beat a machine operated bus. Dilip Kumar, however, accepts the challenge to everybody's surprise. His logic is that they would anyway be driven to starvation if the Bus Service continues. This race at least gives them an opportunity to try and do something. However, the rest of the Tangawallahs do not share his hope. They blame him for his foolishness. In the end, he is left alone with nobody's support except his sweetheart, played by Vyjyanti Mala. As the movie unravels,a hopeless situation begins to turn around because of the way the people come together. Mishap after mishap occurs but nothing can deter the determined. The highlight of the film is definitely the heart stopping final race where the underdog wins and how?

The film was one of the highest grossers of 1957 and also critically acclaimed. The songs "Yeh desh hai veer jawaano ka", "Maang ke saath tumhara", "Ude jab jab zulfein teri", "Saathi haath badhana saathi re" etc. are still favourite with today's yougsters and it was composed by O.P.Nayyar.

Pyaasa songs

Pyaasa is a 1957 Hindi film directed by Guru Dutt. The film tells the story of struggling poet, Vijay (Guru Dutt), trying to make his works known in post-independence India. Gulabo (Waheeda Rehman in her first major leading role in Hindi cinema), a prostitute with a heart of gold, eventually helps him get his poems published. The music was composed by S.D. Burman.

With commercial success of thrillers like Baazi, Jaal, Aar Paar, C.I.D. and comedies Mr. & Mrs. '55, Guru Dutt and his studio were financially secure and established. He could now make movies he really wanted to make, including Pyaasa. Pyaasa is rated as one of the 100 best films of all-time by Time Magazine, which called it "the soulfully romantic of the lot."

Story: Vijay (Guru Dutt) is an unsuccessful poet whose works are not taken seriously by publishers or his brothers (who sell his poems as waste paper). Unable to bear their taunting that he is a good for nothing, he stays away from home and is often out on the streets. He encounters a good-hearted prostitute named Gulabo (Waheeda Rehman), who is enamoured with his poetry and falls in love with him. He also encounters his ex-girlfriend Meena (Mala Sinha) from college and finds out that she is married to a big publisher Mr. Ghosh (Rehman) for financial security, who hires him as a servant to find out more about him and Meena. A dead beggar to whom Vijay gave his coat and whom he tries to save unsuccessfully from the path of a running train is mistaken for Vijay. Gulabo goes to Ghosh and gets his poems published. Ghosh does so feeling he can exploit the poems and make a killing. But Vijay is alive and in hospital after the train mishap.

Ghosh and Shyam, Vijay's close friend, refuse to recognise him and he is committed to a mental asylum since he insists he is Vijay and is thought to be mad. Vijay's brothers too are bought off by Ghosh not to recognize him and a memorial is held for the dead poet. Vijay with the help of his friend Abdul Sattar (Johnny Walker) escapes from the mental asylum and reaches the memorial service where he denounces this corrupt and materialistic world. Seeing that Vijay is alive his friend and brothers take side with a rival publisher for more money and declare this is Vijay. At a function to honour him, Vijay becomes sick of all the hypocrisy in the world around him and declares he is not Vijay. He then leaves with Gulabo to start a new life.

The movie boasts one of the best performances of S.D. Burman, Sahir Ludhianvi, Geeta Dutt and Mohammed Rafi to produce one of the most lyrical Hindi musicals. Pyaasa marked the last collaboration of the long-lasting team of composer S D Burman and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi.

Chaudhvin Ka Chand songs

Chaudhvin Ka Chand is a 1960 Hindi feature film directed by Mohammed Sadiq. A production of Guru Dutt, the film centers on a love triangle between Guru Dutt, Rehman and Waheeda Rehman, and features music by Ravi. Farida Jalal is a guest appearance in the film, her debut. After a disastrous box-office performance of Kaagaz Ke Phool, this was a highly commercially successful and comeback movie for Guru Dutt. The movie saved Guru Dutt's home production studio from ruins.

Though not directed by Guru Dutt, the movie has an unmistakable stamp of the maestro! Some of the songs have been immortalized by beautiful lyrics, music and cinematography and are as popular today as they were in the days this movie was released.

The setting is the city of Lucknow in northern India, where Islamic culture flourished. Two of the three best friends who live in this city have fallen in love with the same woman named Jameela unknowingly. Aslam (Guru Dutt) and Nawab (Rehman) are the two friends caught in this love triangle with Jameela (Waheeda Rehman). An integral part of any Guru Dutt film, comic relief was provided by Johnny Walker who plays Mirza Masaraddik Shaiza.

Mughal-e-Azam songs

Mughal-e-Azam is an Indian epic film. It was produced and directed by K. Asif and released in 1960. The lavish production took nine years to finish. The film broke box office records in India when released and held the record for the highest grossing film ever until the 1975 film Sholay broke its record. In 2004, a colorized version of the movie was released theatrically for the first time. The movie was again a success. The colorization project was executed by Rajeev Dwivedi of Sankranti Creations.

The film re-tells a popular Indian tale, which was previously filmed as Loves of a Mughal Prince (1928) and Anarkali (1953). It is loosely based on an episode in the life of the Mughal prince Salim, who went on to become the Emperor Jahangir. In the movie, the great conqueror Akbar (played by Prithviraj Kapoor) and his Rajput wife, Mariam-uz-Zamani (played by Durga Khote) have a son - the weak and pleasure-loving Salim - played by Dilip Kumar. Salim falls in love with Anarkali (Madhubala), a court-dancer. He wants to marry her, but his father objects and throws Anarkali into prison. Despite imprisonment, Anarkali refuses to reject Salim. Salim rebels against his father, is defeated in battle, and is sentenced to death. Anarkali pleads for his life in exchange for her own, and is condemned to be walled up alive. However, it is revealed that Akbar owed a favor to Anarkali's mother, since she informed him of the birth of his son. Anarkali's mother takes advantage of this, and begs for her daughter's life. The emperor relents, and arranges for Anarkali's secret escape into exile. Unfortunately, it is still announced that Anarkali was killed, and Salim is heartbroken.

Most tales of Salim and Anarkali end with the death of the latter, even though the movie version is slightly more optimistic. However, Salim is still left to believe that Anarkali is dead and the lovers are separated for the rest of their lives.

Mughal-E-Azam's soundtrack was composed by music director Naushad. The song "Pyar Kiya To Darna Kiya" has an unusual history to it: it cost Rs. 10 million at a time when a film would be made for less than a million; it was written and re-written 105 times by the lyricist, Shakeel Badayuni, before the music director, Naushad, could approve of it; it was shot in the renowned Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors); and in those days of sound recording, editing and mixing, as there was no way to provide the reverberation of sound, Naushad had Lata Mangeshkar sing the song in a studio bathroom. The song "Ae Mohabbat Zindabad" had singer Mohammed Rafi with a chorus of 100 singers.

Jaal songs

Jaal is an Indian film, released in 1952. This was Guru Dutt's second movie, after Dev Anand's production "Baazi". Guru Dutt was sort of finding his bearings through commercially successful movies. And after "Baazi", this was the second film in which Dev Anand also came through as a confident star/actor, with a style uniquely his own.

Story : After losing his vision during a storm, Carlos (K.N. Singh) lives with his sister, Maria (Geeta Bali), off the Indian coast in a fishing village. One day a mysterious young woman, Lisa, enters their lives, followed by a mysterious man, Tony Fernandes (Dev Anand). Maria and Tony fall in love with each other, much to the chagrin of Simon, who loves Maria and wants to marry her. Lisa then warns Maria that she has known Tony, they have had an affair together, and he had betrayed her, however, this warning has no effect on Maria. Then a gypsy palm-reader also cautions Maria that she may be headed for disaster at the hands of a stranger. The question remains: who exactly are Lisa and Tony, and what is the reason behind their presence on this fishing community; and whether or not Maria is being drawn into a web of lies and deceit at the hands of Tony?

Set in the fishing village of Goa, this film depicts the ties between Tony, a good-for-nothing man from the city, and Maria, a village girl who loves him innocently. The spirit of Christian love and forgiveness lies at the base of the story, and the film has a strong religious color to it, unusual for Guru Dutt.

Shree 420 is a 1955 Bollywood film directed, produced by and starring Raj Kapoor. The film centers on Raj, a poor, but educated orphan who comes to Bombay with dreams of success. Kapoor's character is heavily influenced by Charlie Chaplin's "little tramp", much like Kapoor's character in his 1951 Awaara.

The film is a collaboration between director/producer Kapoor and writer Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, with music composed by the team of Shankar Jaikishan. The song "Mera Joota Hai Japani" ('My shoes are Japanese'), became hugely popular and a patriotic symbol of the newly independent India.

Shree 420 is the tale of a country boy, Raj (Raj Kapoor), from Allahabad, who travels to the big city, Mumbai, by walk, to earn a living . He falls in love with the poor but virtuous Vidya (Nargis), but is soon seduced by the riches of a freewheeling and unethical lifestyle presented to him by an unscrupulous and dishonest businessman, Seth Sonachand Dharmaanand(Nemo) and the sultry temptress Maya (Nadira). He eventually becomes a swindler, or "420," who even cheats in card gambling. Vidya tried hard to make Raj a good man but fails. Baiju Bawra songs

Baiju Bawra is an award-winning 1952 Bollywood movie. Made in the Hindi language and directed by Vijay Bhatt, it stars Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari. The film was both a commercial and critical success and catapulted both its lead actors into stardom. Meena Kumari went on to win the first-ever Filmfare Best Actress Award in 1954, the first of four Best Actress trophies she won in her career. The film's music director, Naushad, also received the inaugural Filmfare Best Music Director Award for the song "Tu Ganga Ki Mauj"; this was Naushad's first and only Filmfare Award win.

The movie is based on the legend of Baiju Bawra from the days of Mughal Emperor Akbar in India. Baiju (Bhushan) is the son of a musician who also grows up to be a musician. He comes to believe that Tansen, the famed musician at the court of Akbar, was responsible for his father's death. The movie then follows Baiju's attempt to avenge his father's death by challenging Tansen to a musical duel. Meena Kumari plays Baiju's love interest.

The plot centered around music, so it was a necessity that the movie's soundtrack be outstanding. Renowned Bollywood music director Naushad and lyricist Shakeel Badayuni created memorable scores for the movie, all but one of the songs being based on Hindustani classical melodies -- ragas. Esteemed playback singers Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, and Shamshad Begum, and renowned classical vocalists Amir Khan and D. V. Paluskar lent their voices to the scores.

Amir Khan was a consultant for the music. The result was a critically acclaimed movie soundtrack. Famous songs from the movie include Tu Ganga Ki Mouj (raga Bhairavi), Mohe Bhool Gaye Sanwariya (raga Bhairav with traces of Kalingda), Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj (raga Malkauns), Aaj Gaawat Man Mero (raga Desi), O Duniya Ke Rakhwale (raga Darbari), and Jhoole Mein Pawan Ki Aayi Bahar (raga Pilu). Naushad won the Filmfare award for Best Music Director, and Meena Kumari won the Filmfare award for Best Actress.

The film also established Mohd. Rafi as the top male playback singer, a position he held until roughly 1969, and regained in 1977. The songs Rafi sang for the film, including Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj and O Duniya Ke Rakhwale, went on to become smash hits.
